The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Concrete Maintenance Worker in the Public Works department. The employee performs intermediate skilled and semiskilled work in the maintenance, repair and alteration of municipal assets; does related work as required. The work of this class involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled and semiskilled tasks in maintaining, repairing, altering public facilities. Ordinarily employees in this class are required to perform at the journeyman level in only one trade, but work assignments are so varied that employees must exercise reasonable facility in several such trades. Assignments are received in the form of verbal or written work orders and may be accompanied by sketches, penciled layout or blueprints. The work is performed according to general or specific instructions of a supervisor who inspects work while in progress and upon completion. The employee may supervise a small group of semiskilled or unskilled workers.

Essential Functions of Position:

  • performs rough carpentry work which includes measuring, cutting, or shaping wood, plastic, metal pipes, and other materials;
  • performs pouring, spreading, levelling and smoothing of concrete using a variety of specialist equipment;
  • operates jackhammer and concrete saw;
  • operates equipment in concrete placement, maintenance, construction and repair work;
  • mixes prepared paints, stains and/or colors and applies them to a variety of surfaces both inside and outside buildings;
  • build scaffolds and create and set forms for pouring concrete.
  • construct and tie re-enforcing structural steel;
  • applying waterproofing and sealant to protect the concrete work;
  • monitoring the material to ensure it hardens to a durable finish;
  • construct drainage basins with brick or poured in place;
  • install concrete pavers;
  • assists with snow and ice removal;
  • performs related tasks as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, equipment and materials used in construction, roadway or building concrete maintenance and repair work; general knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to municipal maintenance work; ability to interpret and work from sketches and penciled layouts; ability to supervise a small group of semiskilled or unskilled subordinates when necessary; skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary to perform various maintenance and repair tasks, including journeyman level skill in at least one trade, and reasonable facility in several related trades.

Acceptable Experience and Training: High school graduate or GED and considerable experience in building, construction or maintenance and repair work related to concrete or masonry, one of which shall have been at the journeyman level; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Possession of a valid commercial driver's license issued by the State of Tennessee. Pre-employment DOT physical, drug screening and background check required.
